The biggest obstacle being her new neighbor, cocky lawyer Jesse Cochran, the son of a whore-a man determined to put his past behind him and start a new life and family of his own. Despite the undeniable attraction between them, Tori is determined to keep him at arm's length, but a family emergency brings them together and they declare a truce.

Can Jesse win Tori's heart after a series of unplanned events, or will tragedy tear them apart forever?

I won't bother with a synopsis since other reviewers have already provided one.

I was very disappointed in the plausibility of this book. Tori and her family and the rest of the townspeople are trying to build a brand new town, from scratch, on what has been Indian territory. The author claims that within about three weeks Tori and her neices and nephews have built an entire house. Not a small one room house, but a three bedroom house with a kitchen and even a stove. Really? How is it believable that a woman and her teenage nephew could accomplish that in such a short time? Just finding lumber to build the house with would have taken that long. And there's no way they could have gotten a stove that fast. A stove would need to be ordered from a catalouge at the general store (assuming a general store had also been built in those three weeks) and then would take months to ship from back east.

Another unbelievable instance was the Chinese restaurant complete with beaded curtains, dragon paintings, and chop sticks. Seriously? A Chinese restaurant in Indian Territory in a town that's only six months old? Right.... Settlers that were busy building homes and a town would have very little money to waste on any restaurant. So the thought that they would waste money on a dinner with chopsticks is just ridiculous. I mean, can you even picture a rough and tumble cowboy eating a Chinese dinner with chopsticks? No, of course not. These are just two examples of the ridiculous scenarios the author tries to make appear ordinary.

Additionally, Tori is over the top annoying. I couldn't stand her character after a while. She took independence to a whole new level. She was exasperating.

Overall, this book had great potential, but the author just didn't deliver. Not a book I would recommend.

Wow this is a action pack story with never a dull moment story. A new life awaits this desperate family and hard times are in their future. The characters all have had a hard life but come together with many struggles and many hardships to try and form a real family. You will be very entertained if you treat yourself to this book. I would gladly tell all my friends and others to please read this book and the others in this series. Callie is a gifted story teller
Tori & Jesse' s love affair starts the minute the reader meets them. Tori bound to get land in the great "run to stake our her claim land grab" in Oklahoma Land Run of 1889, an 18 year old woman who just inherited 4 children from her deceased brother.

Jesse, a very handsome lawyer, who too is in the "land run''" He meets Tori, a young, very attractive young woman, wire framed glasses over a freckled nose reaching down to pick up the sticks he has accumulated for His fire...and the "sparks begin."

Ms Hutton makes this book much more than a love story; you receive a history lesson as well. You get human characters you meet, like & enjoy. The storyline is believable, you cry & laugh with them & for her characters.. Seriously, once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Read & enjoy a love story in a family action environment.
A very good story although the Run was much harsher than this writer describes. Think Black Friday but worse! Another part that leaves the reader with disbelief is how quickly a house was put together. Where did the money for the wood to build come from? They did not have enough to pay the mortgage so lost her brothers house. This is why they went to the Oklahoma Territory. So with this in mind the actual struggles of a young Tori Henderson taking on the responsibilities of her brothers children, 16 year old Michael, 15 year old Rachael, 12 year old Hunter and 11 year old Ellie is very admirable. Jesse Cochran is a young lawyer from St Louis trying to build a new life for himself and is attracted to Tori and her family despite Tori's continued rebuff's. She is determined to do everything herself and does not want any interference from a man. She had been brought up by a man hating Aunt who told her that she should never trust anyone. Tori startes her own baking business to help support herself and the children with her neighbors the Bonners who are starting a restaurant. Tori gets up very early to do the baking for them. Tori is a teacher and hopes to secure a teaching job after the school gets built. Tori and Jesse are brought together when 15 year old Rachael runs back to their old home to live with a friends family. So overall the story is very good if you overlook some of the details.
I liked this story of Jesse and Tori, and their struggles and love in the Oklahoma Territory. It took a long time for Tori to get over the feeling that she didn't need a man, and her fears of getting pregnant, but I did like her and Jesse's characters. This is a great start to the series, I'm anxious to read the next book.
I should have read the reviews but I didn't since the book was free. This was my first Callie Hutton and went bad fast. At the start of the story we discover no teaching jobs where Tori lives and that she has just taken guardianship of her dead brother's 4 kids. Money is tight. So, hearing about a town run, she is set to start fresh somewhere else. Until this point it was going okay. Tori and Jesse meet just before the run. He takes a liking to her and it's hard to understand why. Remembering they are short of funds, Tori dresses like a male and manages to get a train ticket to the Indian Territory when their wagon is disabled. That whole event was just weird. But she gets her little lot and pitches a tent and very annoyingly is too stupid to know that she is visible at night her tent with a light on - rubbing her boobs and being conveniently seen by Jesse. There is also a magic place where everyone gets free lumber to build their homes and businesses within amazing short time spans. Also they get furnishings and decor the same was. AND her 16 or 17 year old nephew designed her home! This story is oddly devoid of details and too unrealistic for me.Since I didn't care about these people or their story, I quite reading. Not sure if I'll try another from Ms. Hutton.
I won't bother with a synopsis since other reviewers have already provided one.
